The Thought For The Day: Smart Patient

Posted by Dr. AJ Rubano 22 Jun, 2010

Inspiration:  “Keep a watch also on the faults of the patients, which often make them lie about the taking of things prescribed.”  Hippocrates
Be: (positive confession) I am a Smart Patient.

Do: (First Steps) Today, take back control of your health care. By being informed and organized you can help protect yourself from ignorance and medical negligence.  According to Mehmet Oz, M.D. star of The Dr. Oz Show here are 3 things you can do to be a better patient: 1. Seek a second opinion because about 30% of the time this will result in a changed diagnosis or treatment plan. 2. Keep a written medical history and educate yourself about any family history of illness or disease.  3. Consider signing on to Microsoft Health Vault or Google Health so that your files are easily accessible even if you are away from home.  Lastly, here’s one of my own “be honest”.  If you choose not to take a drug or are taking something not prescribed (perhaps leftovers of a relative’s prescription) tell your doctor.  Even good doctors can be hamstrung by misinformation.

Have: (Making Dreams Reality) As I assume a greater level of responsibility for important health related concerns I’ll help protect myself, as much as possible, from bad medicine and do my part to live a longer more productive life.

Be, Do, and Have the best day of your life! God Bless You!

The Thought For The Day: Still

Posted by Dr. AJ Rubano 21 Jun, 2010

Monday, June 21, 2010

Inspiration:  “Being still and doing nothing are two very different things.” Spoken By Mr.Han (played by Jackie Chan in The New Karate Kid)

Be: (positive confession) I am Still.

Do: (First Steps) Today, make it a point to step away from frenzied or mindless activity.  Invest in a time to quiet yourself before God.  This doesn’t mean, however, that you shut down, but rather you shut out preconceived notions of how you see things or think things should be and focus intently on His voice and His heart relying and trusting in the fact that He is Wisdom.  Commit to doing this daily, ideally before you start in on each day’s routine of work or play.  This will allow you to tune into the frequency that He has designed to set the tempo for your day and your life.

Have: (Making Dreams Reality) As I sequester myself to the influence of the all knowing, all powerful God who created me I’ll experience a greater level of efficiency and accomplishment with less effort.

Be, Do, and Have the best day of your life! God Bless You!

The Thought For The Day: Wholesomely Ambitious

Posted by Dr. AJ Rubano 15 Jun, 2010

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Inspiration:  “A man without ambition is dead. A man with ambition but no love is dead. A man with ambition and love for his blessings here on earth is ever so alive.”  Pearl Bailey

Be: (positive confession) I am Wholesomely Ambitious.

Do: (First Steps) Today, recognize that you are gifted and you have an obligation to share your gifts with the world.  In the book, The Broken American Maleby Rabbi Shmuley Boteach he describes two types of ambition as follows: “Broken Ambition is based on the idea that the individual is unworthy and must seek external achievement in order to be distinguished…..Wholesome Ambition is predicated on the idea that all humans are born with infinite value…created in the image of God and therefore born intrinsically and infinitely unique and special.” Someone who is wholesomely ambitious doesn’t look at colleagues as competitors or view others success as infringing on their own.  Free yourself from trying to prove your worthiness, realizing that, as Rabbi Boteach so precisely states “(your) existence was called forth from nothingness to add to the majesty and perfection that is God’s creation.”

Have: (Making Dreams Reality) As I focus my attention on maximizing my potential rather than deriving self-worth from competitive prowess the result of my ambition will no longer be validation but exclamation of my presence here on God’s green Earth!

The Thought For The Day: Medicine Mouth

Posted by Dr. AJ Rubano 14 Jun, 2010

Monday, June 14, 2010

Inspiration:  “If you don’t have something good to say don’t say anything at all.”  Your Mom

Be: (positive confession) I am a Medicine Mouth.

Do: (First Steps) Today, understand the power of your words.  Your “mom’s” advice not to speak toxic words to others must first apply to YOU.  Don’t be caught muttering “I’m no good” or “I never get any breaks.”  If you’re sick and tired maybe it has something to do with your frequent declaration “I’m sick and tired of ____________ (fill in the blank)!”  Go one step further; don’t just avoid making negative statements replace them with positive ones.  One way to do this is by phrasing your “positive remarks” in the form of a question to yourself!  This helps to engage the natural human tendency of problem solving.  So the next time you get ready to embark on a new diet or exercise plan ask your self “Why am I so disciplined in my eating/exercise?”;  when you are preparing to give an important presentation at work you can make the querry: “Why am I such an organized and well recieved speaker?”  This even works with your children.  If you have been in the parenting business for long, by now you realize that railing on them for forgetting an assignment only frustrates you and exasperates them.  The next time you are confronted with this situation get your child in the problem solving mode with a quiz-like question that begs a response “Why are you so diligent and on top of your assignments?”  Be creative in your inquiries and track your results!

Have: (Making Dreams Reality) As I replace comments that cut with expressions that empower I will simultaneously write and fill the prescription for success!

Be, Do, and Have the best day of your life! God Bless You!

The Thought For The Day: Gamer

Posted by Dr. AJ Rubano 8 Jun, 2010

Inspiration:  “The man who has no problems is out of the game”  Elbert Hubbard, Publisher

Be: (positive confession) I am a Gamer.

Do: (First Steps) Today, don’t allow yourself to be discouraged by the problems you face or think that successful people are not confronted with daily challenges.  Gamers are always ready for trying circumstances and face them head on without allowing fear to overcome themPrepare yourself mentally, spiritually, and physically for whatever difficulties your enemies may bring.

Have: (Making Dreams Reality) As I embrace the trials inherent in the game of life with the mentality of a true gamer I’ll blast through the obstacles that hold the unwilling and ill-prepared back and experience the joys of a victoriuous life.

The Thought For The Day: Going Nuts

Posted by Dr. AJ Rubano 2 Jun, 2010

Wednesday June 2, 2010

Inspiration: Studies show that people who eat about an ounce of nuts each day have a lower risk of heart disease.  Nuts are high in monounsaturated fat which lowers the level of “LDL” (bad cholesterol) and keeps “HDL” intact (good cholesterol).  American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Feb. 2006

Be: (positive Confession) I am Going Nuts.

Do: (first steps) Today, grab a handful of nutsEating raw, unprocessed nuts is a great way to enhance your health.   Nuts are a great source of fiber, good fats, and plant based protein.  The best part is that there is a wide variety to pick from.  When deciding on which nut you choose to indulge in remember that in most cases nut butters use the poorest quality nuts available; so if you like peanut or almond butter get the kind that is made fresh in front of you while you realize that the whole nut has superior health benefits.  You will also want to keep in mind that peanuts, while a good source of protein, vitamin e, niacin, and fiber are also commonly linked to allergies and aflatoxins (a naturally occuring poison spread through molds that have been correlated with a variety of liver problems including cirrhosis, heapatitis, and liver cancer).  Better choices are Macadamia Nuts, Almonds, Cashews, Pecans, Brazilian Nuts and Walnuts!

Have: (making dreams reality) As I make nuts a staple in my diet I’ll reap the benefit of a healthier heart.

The Thought For The Day: Digger

Posted by Dr. AJ Rubano 27 May, 2010

Thursday, May 27, 2010

Inspiration: “It matters not what goal you seek - Its secret here reposes: You’ve got to dig from week to week - To get Results or Roses”  Edgar Guest, poet

Be: (positive confession) I Am a Digger.
Do: (first steps) Today, dig a little deeper with the assurance that most things of lasting value, (be it diamonds, oil, or a firmer grasp on any discipline) are found below the surface.
Have: (making dreams reality) As I excavate below the surface level where most people stop, the deeper I go the greater the mountain formed by the earth I’ve moved.

The Thought For The Day: First Responder

Posted by Dr. AJ Rubano 20 May, 2010

Thursday May 20, 2010

Inspiration: “When you respond to life, that’s positive; when you react to life, that’s negative.” Zig Ziglar

Be: (positive Confession) I am a First Responder.

Do: (first steps) Today, don’t react to negative situations, respond to them.  Reactions tend to be reflexive actions that are often based on things that have nothing to do with the circumstances at hand; and are offered as a mechanism to protect ourselves rather than serve the concerns of others.  Your wife tells you she wants some work done around the house but you hear “get off your butt you lazy bum” because that’s what you heard growing up.  A client tells you that your product is “a lot of money” and you immediately think they are saying “I can’t afford it” when they are really just expressing they need to be creative to make it work into their budget.  Merely reacting to your perception in these cases might lead to an unnecessary argument or lost business.  Responsiveness, though, calls for a higher level of listening and the ability to take your personal feelings out of the equation much like that done by real life first responders who enter into emergent predicaments yet have learned not to panic and rely on objective measures to make life saving decisions. The next time you find yourself in a position that might evoke a negative reaction step back, replay the other party’s statement listening for the need they are expressing (not the attack on you personally or your service/business), then interject another perspective on their concern before providing a solution to the problem.

Have: (making dreams reality) As I become more attuned to the cares and needs of others I will find that the responses I give will disarm insecurities of their power, position myself to be of helpful service, and provide a better outcome for every party involved.

The Thought For The Day: Pardon The Interruption

Posted by Dr. AJ Rubano 19 May, 2010

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

Inspiration:  “We interrupt this program for an important announcement.”  Public Domain

Be: (positive confession) I Am Pardoning The Interruption.
Do: (first steps) Have you, a loved one, or your employees fallen into patterns that seem to be causing you more harm than good?  Do you accept character flaws as being “part of who I am”? Today, practice something called a “pattern interrupt”.   The next time you are tempted to criticize an attribute you dislike in yourself or others, or tacitly accept a fault replace it with these words: “STOP! That _______ (name the problem) is so unlike me/you.  I/you am usually so _______ (name the positive trait or habit you want to ingrain).”  In essence you are consciously addressing things that you have typically subconsciously allowed to control your destiny.
Have: (making dreams reality) As Imake timely interruptions in the status quo I’ll have the opportunity for positive eruptions of success.

The Thought For The Day: Buyologist

Posted by Dr. AJ Rubano 13 May, 2010

Thursday May 13, 2010

Inspiration: “Many a man thinks he is buying pleasure, when he is really selling himself to it.” Benjamin Franklin

Be: (positive Confession) I am a Buy-ologist.

Do: (first steps) Today, buy assets not liabilities.  Most of us know that liabilities are typically consumables and would include things like most automobiles, food, sporting goods, food, and furniture.  But are you sure if what you think are assets are not just liabilities in disguise?  We’ve been taught that assets are anything that go up in value over time or are they.  Take for example a US Saving bond or a Certificate of Deposit (CD).  In today’s economy a CD that pays you 3% interest will actually cost you about $10 dollars on a $1000 “investment” if you factor in taxes on your return (assuming a 15% tax bracket) and the rate of inflation.  Now more than ever you need to do your due diligence to make sure the vehicles you place your money in, be it stocks, mutual funds, real estate, or collectibles are bringing you a real, profitable return.

Have: (making dreams reality) As I invest in items that progressively increase in worth my net worth will increase as well.

Be, Do, and Have the Best Day of Your Life! God Bless You!
