Be, Do, Have is all about the order of success. Success is measured in results, which is what most people tend to focus on. Have you ever heard someone say something to this effect: “if I only had more money then I would be at peace” or listened to another reveal “if I just had a spouse I know that would make me a happy person.”? If so, what you have witnessed is something I like to call a reversal of fortunes.
Let me explain. The results we want are merely a by-product; meaning they are contingent on the success of other factors. What you end up getting or having is dependent on the things you do which flows out of who you are. This is the order of success: Be, Do, and Have. Trying to do it any other way will only produce frustration and instead of bringing success and prosperity cause you to grow wearier and wearier. Reversal of Fortunes. There is a better way, and I am happy to say it wasn’t my idea (or that of some other present day motivational speaker either).
Doing Without Being
Who we are relates directly to purpose. It is the reason why we do the things we do. A wise man once said “Show me someone who knows how and he will always have a job; show me someone who knows why and he will be the boss.” Before you can make any sort of impact in this world you have to know and develop your mission. Haphazardly doing things might bring you success in the short term, but trust me, will only result in frustration over the long haul.
Of what value is it to a man to gain the whole world, yet lose his soul. I can’t stress strongly enough the importance of BE. When Moses asked God who he should say sent him to deliver the Israelites from the hands of Pharaoh, God replied “I am that I am.” When Jesus was confronted with questions about his authority, he relayed “Before Abraham was I am.” You must know who you are; and who you are IS NOT what you do.
You are not a doctor, lawyer, or Indian chief. Any one of those may be your occupation; but who you are, the aspects that make up your character and are the background for every decision you make go much deeper than that.
What If I Don’t Like Who I Am
Who you are in many cases will be different from who you think you are. Who you think you are most likely stems from what you have heard others say about you, or perhaps something you read about, or even saw in a photo or magazine. It is subject to familial, societal, and environmental input. It may be influenced by misinterpretation of statements made by well meaning teachers or parents. It could possibly be the result of what you perceive you are supposed to be and your disappointment for not measuring up to societal standards.
The good news is that both who you are and what you think about yourself are subject to change for the better.
Timeless scriptural writings declare we need to be transformed by daily renewing our minds. As God’s word is allowed to pierce through to the depth of our being consistently and continually then and only then can we begin the transformation process from seeing ourselves through the lens of a world view to being found in the image of the most powerful force in the Universe, the Lord, Jesus Christ.
You may not like what you see now, but as you commit to the process of thinking on things that are true, just, lovely, and loveable- getting rid of stinking thinking- you’ll be pleased with who you become.
Being Without Doing
Did you know you were created to DO good works? Claiming to Be something without actually putting your new found knowledge into action defies the evidence that any change took place. Imagine going to school for 12 years and graduating at the top of your class in medical school and never actually practicing medicine; never allowing your knowledge to help someone recover from a sickness. It sounds silly, but people do it every day.
Action is both the evidence that a change has taken place and the fuel for greater growth and development. One good action feeds on another, and another, and so on……
Your doing helps take things from the unseen realm and brings it into reality. James put it best when he said, “Faith without works is dead.” Anyone who would try to persuade you to believe that by merely thinking on a matter it will magically appear in your life is either disillusioned or dishonest, and in either case I would steer clear.
When God gives you a vision for any area of your life he expects you to follow through diligently with well thought out action steps.
Remember, “whatever the master tells you to do, just do it.” (John 2:5 Message)
Having The Desires of Your Heart
If I were to write out the formula for success as a math equation it might look like this:
BE x DO = HAVE
Increasing your understanding of who God says you are as well as who you say you are along with following a specific plan of action will multiply and produce manifold results. By the same token failure to consistently follow through in either of the other two areas will divide and significantly reduce your potential for rewards.
The key to having the desires of your heart rest in this formula and your motivation behind it. If your desire is simply to gather and horde for yourself I wouldn’t expect a huge improvement. If you desire, however, to spread the wealth so to speak then you will HAVE more than you could imagine; for in doing so you bring another law into action, “The Law of Sowing and Reaping”.
At this point I want to remind you NOT to be HAVE oriented. Remember the HAVE will take care of itself as you take care to know and develop who you are and what you do with the precious resources you have already been blessed with. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things (houses, cars, stable environment for your children, security, peace, etc.) shall be added unto you”
Getting The Most Out of The Be, Do, and Have Daily Thoughts
For best results read the inspirational quotes out loud, speak the confession several times throughout the day (especially when you are tempted to think the opposite or negative thoughts that pop in you head), and do at least one of the action steps recommended in the “Do” part. The “Have” comes as a result of the consistent practice of the other three.
